Mystery Number Skype - Two at Once? Yes!

On Thursday we did our Mystery Number Skype a little differently. Instead of having one call for all the class we split into a group of numbers to 20 and another group of numbers to 40. We set up in two different parts of the classroom and Ms. Lirenman brought in her personal computer.  It was a great opportunity and a ton of fun to learn with Mrs. Cassidy's grade one and two students too.  Here are some photos of what it looked like.

This  group is working with numbers to 20.

Here are the two groups in action at the same time.

Thank you Mrs. Cassidy's class. It was a wonderful way to learn with you. Let's do it again soon.

Learning to Code

Today Ms. Lirenman introduced us to the iPad app Kodable.  It is an app that helps us understand some of the basics of coding.  For many of us it was very frustrating at first when we couldn't get the fuzzles to move the way they needed to move. But we didn't give up and we were eventually able to solve most of the problems we were presented with.  Here are some photos of us using Kodable.

Learning About Sharks

Last Thursday we were very lucky to learn about sharks from Sharks4Kids via Skype.  Here are some photos from our video call with Jillian.

We learned that sharks don't bite humans on purpose because we aren't the type of food they want to eat. Yes, sometimes they bite humans but it's usually because they think we are a seal or other type of food they like to eat.  We learned so many new things about sharks and how important they are for our oceans.

After the call was over we started making posters so we could share the shark love.

Here are some of the final projects.  We have put some posters up in our classroom and a lot more around our school.

Thank you Jillian from Sharks4Kids for spending time with us. As you can see, we learned a lot. Also if you check out blogs under "writing" you will see more posts about sharks.

Read to Someone over 1700 Km Away!

This morning a couple of us had the opportunity to read to someone in Ms. Cassidy's class in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  Ms. Lirenman has been talking to us about this for a little while now but today it actually happened.  Last week we picked some books that we like to read and shared our list with Ms. Cassidy's class.  They did the same and shared their book list with us. We then were partnered up based on the books we like to read.  We will each get a chance to read with someone in Ms. Cassidy's class as Ms. Lirenman tells us we are going to do it a few times aweek when both classes are available.  Stay tuned for more reading adventures.

An Osmo Word Work Morning

Last year Ms. Lirenman and her students were fortunate to be Beta testers for a product now called Osmo (we knew it as Tangible Play).  Some of us have now started to use it again for our word work. Take a look.

Math, Math, Math

Right now we are working on number sense and addition in math.  If you come into our classroom during math you will see a whole bunch of different things happening at the same time but we are all learning.  Here is what it looked like today.

Word Work

We have many different ways to practice our word work.  Here is how some of us chose to practice today.

The best part of word work is that we get to decide how we want to practice our words. How do you practice your words?

Our Community

As part of our socials studies curriculum the grade two students in our class have been working on a mural of our community. Here is the finished product. Can you see where you live?

A Double Video Conference Day - Learning with Friends from a Far

Today we started our math time with a video conference call with our friends in Ms. Cassidy's class. We once again played "guess my number" but this time we had to guess numbers between 1 and 40. Thankfully both classes were successful at guessing the other classes number.

Then in the afternoon, after a few days of practice, we took part in a Reader's Theatre with Ms. DeGroot's class.  Each class learned both parts to a Leaf reader's theatre. Then we perfomed the script twice once being leaf a, and the second time being leaf b.  For some the reading was great reading practice. For others it was great to help with reading fluency.  It was a great opportunity for learning.

It was another great day of learning.

Learning About Aboriginal Trading

This morning Kaileigh came back to teach us more about aboriginal culture. Today we learned about how trading was a big part of their culture.  We learned that over 10,000 years ago different people groups of people would trade for things they didn't have. For example the people who lived by the sea would trade their fish or seafood for mountain lions from the people who lived on the mountains.  We learned that as the Europeans came they also traded with the aboriginal culture.

Here are a couple of photos of Kaileigh sharing with us.

Halloween

In case you missed it here is what we looked like in the afternoon on Halloween Friday. One smiley photo one silly photo per group. Enjoy.
