Coding with Scratch Jr

Recently we have returned to learning how to code on our iPads using a FREE program called Scratch Jr.  Coding is teaching us problem solving skills and perseverance.  Here are some photos of us busy coding this week.

Have you ever tried coding before?

Math Wonders About Our World: This Weeks #mtgr1

For most of the year, each week we have taken part in something called #mtgr1.  It is organized by a teacher in Iowa named Mrs. DeGroot.  Each week Mrs. DeGroot puts up an open ended math problem and children from around the world have the opportunity to respond to it by tweeting their responses to the twitter hashtag #mtgr1.

This past week we were asked to look at a picture of a globe and share our mathematical wonders. Here are some of our wonders...

Class Kindness

Each Friday before "Free Choice" Friday we take the time to reflect on the week and share how we have been kind at school.  We share our reflection on twitter through the hashtag #classkindness.  Here is this past weeks reflection.  How are you kind to your classmates?

Our Plants are Growing!

We have been watching our plants for a little over a week now. We take very good care of them by giving them a lot of sunlight and water.  Our hard work has been paying off. Take a look at what we have now...

Can you see the tiny carrot plants coming through the soil?

Beans and peas. The beans are already over 13 cm tall.

Our window box filled with flower seeds is sprouting every where too!  It's so exciting.

Daily Physical Activity

Every day it is important that we have some form of daily physical activity (DPA) beyond our fun at recess times. Today our DPA involved in class mini circuts that worked different parts of our body. Take a look.

What are some ways you keep your body moving in your classroom?

Plants, Plants, and More Plants

Over the past week we have been very busy learning about plants.  The best way to do this is by planting our own  seeds.  So far we have planted beans, peas, carrots, and four different types of flowers.  We've also looked at different seeds.  Here are some photos from the past week.

Learning and Litter

This afternoon we had Mrs. K in from the City of Surrey.  She taught us so much about litter.

Do you know the answer to the question below?

If you couldn't figure it out it's not homework, it's food wrappers.

We also learned about the impact of litter on animals and our oceans.

We learned that there is a whole bunch of litter in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and it's almost the size of our entire province of British Columbia.

At one point we played a game with items in our recycle box.  We had to try to shoot a basket while facing the opposite direction.  Mrs. K said we were really good setting a new record for baskets for all of Surrey.

Then we headed outside to cleam up our school grounds.  We were given a special vest to wear, special gloves to wear, and special tongs to use.  We found one big bag of gargage.

It was a great afternoon of learning about litter.

Chirpy Chicks

As Ms. Lirenman was working with small groups of children to help us dye our eggs the rest of us were working on our Chirpy Bird project that she learned about from a special book.  Take a look at some of the "Chirpy Chicks" we created.

Have you ever made Chirpy Chicks before?

Dying Eggs

This morning everyone came to school with one egg and in some cases an extra egg for a friend.

Later in the day in smalll groups we changed the plain eggs to something a lot more special.

Did you dye eggs this week too?
