Free Choice Friday

This Friday afternoon a couple of our classmates got together to create this movie of what we were doing on Free Choice Friday this week.  Ms. Lirenman said she'd share it on our blog so here it is.

Do you every have free choice time to do what every you'd like in the classroom?

PS If you notice that Ms. L looks kind of grumpy in her pictures it was because she was dealing with some iPads that were having some troubles.

Writing Writing Writing!

Today we learned about a few more ways we can use our iPads for writing. Many of us were pretty excited to explore them during writing time.  Here are a few photos from today's writing time.

Playing with Measurement

This past week we started to play with measurement with four new math activities to explore.  Here's a little peek into what some of us have been up to.

1. Bigger or Smaller

These students are taking pictures of different parts of their body. They are uploading them to the Book Creator app where they are creating a book with sentences such as my eye is bigger than a baby's eye or My nose is smaller than an elephant's nose. Everything is being compared to either an elephant, or a baby.

Here are some blog posts showing their final product.

2.  Measurement Tools

This group is using the pic collage app to to search for various tools used for measurement.

Here are a few samples.

3. Measuring with My Hand

This group just might be having the most fun. They have  traced and cut out two of their hands and are going on a measurement adventure measuring objects around the room. For the second part of this activity the children found objects bigger, smaller, and the same size as their hands. They will record this information in an iMovie.

Here are some of their final movies.

4. How Big is My Footstep?

This last group is trying to figure out how big their foot step is by measuring their step with a variety of different objects.  Some students also created an iMovie with the different things they measured their footstep with.

Here is a sample video.

The Zumba Show

Today we had a Zumba Show. We danced in front of other children and our families. During the show we sang the song "Happy". We danced to Zumbala. (Karamvir)  At the end of the show the parents could come dance too. (Jaslehna) It was so fun. (Tanvir) Have you ever been a part of a Zumba show?

Here are some pictures of us practicing our Zumba.

Things We Measure

This morning we started our measurement unit by creating posters of things we measure. As we started talking with one another we realized that we measure a lot of different things in a lot of different ways.

What are some things that you measure?  What tools do you use to measure?

Kinetic Sand

Over the break Ms. Lirenman picked up some Kinetic Sand for our class.  It's made of sand but it acts differently than sand.  When you play with it it stays together for a little while before breaking apart.

This morning some of us tried to make our word wall words with our Kinetic Sand.

This word says bug but you can see some of the spaces already filled in.

Have you ever worked with Kinetic Sand?
