Learning with Pumpkins

On Thursday Ms. Lirenman read the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret McNamara illustrated by G. Brian Karas. With the knowledge we gained from the book we made predictions about how many seeds we thought might be in the pumpkins we had in our classroom.

We then got to work scooping out the insides of the pumpkin and sorting out the seeds.

It was fun but messy work.

Then we had to count our seeds. Ms. Lirenman drew tens frames on our paper so it was pretty easy to count our seeds.

In between our counting we also had to see if we could pick the string that matched the circumference of our pumpkin.  Three groups could do it and four had a bit of trouble.

In the end we ran out of time and didn't get to finish counting all of our seeds. It was still a great way to learn a little bit more about pumpkins and a whole lot more about math.

Wilderness Wednesday

This week during "Wilderness Wednesday" we started by revisiting the trees we adopted two weeks ago. We did an inspection of our trees and noticed the changes that had happened.  Some of our trees were slightly damaged by a wind storm, and some had lost most of their leaves. We noticed animals now living on our trees (which we didn't notice before).  It was good to check in with our trees and we shared what we saw with one another.

After that we looked carefully for some of the treasures nature has left behind for us.

Have you ever looked for treasures in nature?

Making Bread

This week we made bread for our very first time. The recipe was perfect for us too as everyone was able to add something into the bread maker.

The finished bread was delicious too!

Moonlight Art

This week we created some beautiful art work using paint and paper. Take a look at our process and the finished products.

A Field Trip to the Apple Store

This morning some of our parents brought us to the  Apple Store for a field trip.  We felt pretty special because at first, we had the store to ourselves.  The great people at the store showed us how to use iMovie trailers.  Ms. Lirenman was hoping we would create kindness trailers, but we had more fun making our own movies and getting to know how to use iMovie trailers.  Here are some photos of our adventure.  Have you ever had a field trip to the Apple Store?  What did you learn?

A huge thank you to the people at Apple and our families that came with us. Without either of these groups of people,  we wouldn't have been able to have this fun adventure.
