Project Chef Official Day One

Today it was finally our turn to have the Project Chef experience in the school's "Project Chef Kitchen" and boy we weren't disappointed.  We learned so many new things today and if you asked us we'd each probably tell you something different.  The highlight, however, was preparing and eating a delicious friendship fruit salad.  Here are some photos from day one.

And yes, of course, we did the dishes too! 

Indigenous Culture Projects

For the past few weeks, we have been working in groups of one, two, or three learning about different Indigenous cultures.  Today half of our class presented our final products to our classmates.  Here are three of the presentations shared today.

After each group presented the audience provided written feedback to the presenters.  This included filling in the following prompts:

Ms. Lirenman was quite impressed with our first presentations and the feedback we gave to each other.  She says there will be a lot more presentations this year.  Have you ever had to give a presentation in front of your entire class? 

Our First Field Trip

Today we headed out on public transit to make our way to UBC to visit the Beatty Biodiversity Museum.  The bus ride was a bit warm and crowded but we arrived safely and in time to have a snack before heading into the museum for our special program.  When you walk in you can't help but notice the amazing Blue Whale Skeleton hanging from the ceiling.

  

We quickly met our leaders and began to learn about animal adaptations.

We then moved into the Discovery Lab where we looked closely at duck wings and sea horses paying close attention to the type of adaptations each artifact had.

We then headed into the museum to look at different animal samples that were present to recognize and notice the adaptations that our chosen animal had and what they might use that adaption for. As we collected enough samples we were given time to create our very own animal with all the adaptations we discovered. There were some very silly animals created.

At this point, our session was over and we were getting hungry so we headed outside to eat our lunch and have a bit of playtime.  We then walked over to the Reconciliation Pole at UBC  to learn more about it.  Of course, we spent some time sketching as well.  It's really quite an incredible work of art.

 

For our final stop before catching the bus back to school we went to the Old Barn Community Centre and took advantage of the beautiful weather, lovely open space, and sports equipment they shared with us. 

It was a great day indeed.

The Afternoon Project Chef Came to our Classroom!

At the moment the Project Chef Team is in residence in our school and we couldn't be happier.  Each class in the school is experiencing 4 or 5 half-day sessions of cooking healthy edible food.  This week we had a turn of having Project Chef in our classroom. Chef Barb and Chef Leslie turned our classroom into a cooking studio and we made delicious, healthy orange cranberry muffins.  We couldn't have done it without our fabulous parent volunteers and are amazing PAC that is supporting the program.  We are indeed a very fortunate group of children.

And we're back!

It's been over a year since this blog was up and running and sharing the great learning that has been happening in Ms. Lirenman's class. As of about a week ago, Ms. Lirenman has been busy talking about this blog with her families and collecting family permission.  While all the permission slips haven't been returned yet, she's excited to be able to reopen this blog.  Check back often as she and her students have lots to share.

Some Changes Ahead

Ms Lirenman has taken a leap of faith and has accepted a teaching job within the Vancouver School District as of Sept 1, 2018.   As she navigates her new job in her new school district this class blog may remain quiet. Please note that Ms Lirenman can still be reached through the contact section on her professional blog www.klirenman.com . Although that blog has been quiet for a while too, she does hope to have it activated again soon.  Thank you for taking the time to drop by this blog.

Games Day

While we usually don't come to school on Fridays, today was a special day at school so a few of us came. Do you know what day it was? Today was GAMES DAY!

The weather was colder than normal, and a little rain too but we still had a lot of fun moving from station to station on the grass field.  Here are some photos of the morning.





In the afternoon we were supposed to have grade level and colour team activities but the rain just got worse and worse so we stayed inside the classroom instead.
