Looking Closely

Yesterday we used our focusing frames to look really closely outside our classroom.  Here are some photos of us doing just that.

It's Book Shopping Friday

Each Friday we have book talks and then we get to go shopping for new books.  We get so excited about our new books. You should hear us talking about them. But since you can't hear, here are some photos of us enjoying our new books.

To Write in a Notebook or to Write on a Blog

Today we got to decide if we wanted to write on our blog or to write in a journal.  We also got to decide where we wanted to do this writing.  Here are some photos of us doing just that.

Our Observation Window

Today Ms. Lirenman pointed out our observation window. It is one extra special window that we will be looking out all year long to see and document changes over time.  It is one of the ways we will be a scientist by making careful observations.  Here is a picture of the window.

Today, after we spent a bit of time looking out our window we drew or wrote about what we noticed.  During instructional lunch some of us took the time to share our observations with the class.  Here are some photos of us sharing.

Making our Special Cards

This week we are busy creating special images that will be turned into cards when we are finished.  Here are some pictures of us working on step one.  If you look carefully we have all blended our own shades of blue.

The Global Read Aloud is Coming!

In one weeks time we will be taking part in the Global Read Aloud.  What you may ask is the Global Read Aloud? The Global Read Aloud connects children from around the world over a shared book. This year there are four books to choose from and as a Grade One Class there are two different options for us and we will be enjoying both.

To begin with we will be taking part in the Eric Carle book study.  We will be working with a variety of classes sharing ideas and co creating projects.  Here are some of the books we'll be reading together.

Week 1 Sept 30 : The Very Hungry CaterpillarWeek 2 Oct 7: Have You Seen My CatWeek 3 Oct 14: The Mixed Up ChameleonWeek 4 Oct 21: Do You Want to Be My Friend? and A House for a Hermit CrabWeek 5 Oct 28: Hello Red Fox and A Very Lonely FireflyWeek 6 Nov 4: Slowly, Slowly said the Sloth

We will also been sharing Marty McGuire by Kate Messner . This is a chapter book which Ms. Lirenman will read to us over the course of six weeks. Again we will do projects with this book too. We will connect with many children both locally in Surrey, and beyond. Here is the schedule for Marty McGuire.

Week 1 Sept 30: Chapters 1-2 (pg. 1-19)Week 2 Oct 7: Chapters 3-5 (pg. 20-38)Week 3 Oct 14: Chapters 6-7 (pg. 39-57)Week 4 Oct 21: Chapters 8-9 (pg. 58-79)Week 5 Oct 28: Chapters 10-11 (pg. 80-95)Week 6 Nov 4: Chapters 12-14 (pg. 96-131)

As you can imagine Ms. Lirenman is really excited to have us connecting with other children around the world over shared stories.  We are excited too.

Terry Fox

This week, as a school,  we raised money for the Terry Fox Cancer Research fund. Each day we were asked to bring in a small donation - nickels and dimes on Tuesday, quarters on Wednesday, loonies on Thursday, and toonies on Friday.  The school goal was to raise $1100. If we raised that much money or more Ms. Lirenman and a few other teachers including the principal are going to have their hair spray painted by one of us at a school assembly.

We watched this movie on Terry Fox not once but twice because we were so interested in his story.

On Friday we also took part in our school Terry Fox run. While Ms. Lirenman didn't have her camera Jaslehna's mom did and was kind enough to share photos with Ms. Lirenman.  Here are some photos from the Terry Fox run.

Heading to meet the rest of the kids in the school.
Almost there.
We don't want to be late.

Getting ready to start the warm up.
We're off!

Running around the field is hard work.

A special thank you to Jaslehna's mother for taking and sharing all these wonderful photos.

Looking at Patterns

We have started to learn a bit about patterns. Here are a few picture of us patterning away.

Reading to Someone

Today we learned how to read to someone.  We learned about EEKK which stands for elbow to elbow, knee to knee. Here are some photos of us practicing.
