"Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. It is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace that is right for each individual child. Earlier is not better" Magda Gerber

Artists at Work
We continue to work on our self portraits. At this time many of us are just about finished. We can't wait to show you the final products
Also in case you forgot we only had red, yellow, blue, black, and white paint to work with. We had to create all are own colours from those ones.

Water Movers
Today during free choice some of the children worked together to create an invention that moved water into a student water bottle. As you can see from the "precaution" equipment (plastic bins and lids and a shirt to wipe up any spills nearby), they weren't sure if it would leak or not. Watch the video below to see what happened.
What kind of inventions have you made in your classroom?
We Have Blogs
This morning Ms. Lirenman introduced us to our own blogs. Here we are writing our first blog post. Be sure to check out the tab above that takes you to our blogs. We will have a lot of our learning to share. Do you have a blog?

Self Portraits
This afternoon we used an iPad to take a selfie. We then used our selfie to draw the shape of our face. We then colour mixed white paint with brown and red paint to create our skin tone. Tomorrow we will continue to work on our self portraits. Take a look at us hard at work.

Read to Self
This morning we worked on "Read to Self" for our first time. After going over what it should look and sound like when we read to ourselves, we found our own comfy spots around the room to read. Ms. Lirenman took some pictures of some of us. If you look really closely you can see four children reading in the top picture. As you probably can guess, we all picked our own spots.
For our first time, we were able to read for 4 minutes in a row without making any noise and staying in our spots. (Don't worry we have special ear/mouth phones for those of us who read outside of our heads). Tomorrow we hope to read for even longer.

The popular tent. A great place to read on your own or with a friend. |
Always comfy on a bean bag chair. |
Learning Outside
Today we took a little walk around the front of our school. Depending on our grade level we were either looking for living and non-living things or we were looking at the different plants that grow on our school grounds. We decided to take both a magnifying glass and iPad with us. We used iPad to capture what we were seeing. Then we came back into the classroom and worked together to create a collage of what we saw. Here are some images from our afternoon adventure.
Have you ever taken the time to notice all the different things that are growing on your school property?

Dot Day
Today was our first full day together. This afternoon Ms. Lirenman let us know that it was International Dot Day. We read the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. We then created our own dots by using special augmented reality paper. Take a look at what happened with our creations.
Things That Make Our Hearts Happy
This afternoon, we spent some time sharing our home learning around things that make our heart happy. Here are some photos of some of us presenting our posters.

Our First Lego Challenge
It was an exciting day for Ms. Lirenman and hopefully the new students that came today too. While our time together was quite short we did take part in our first Lego challenge. Ms. Lirenman asked us to create our first names in Lego but we had to be able pick up each letter too. Take a look at what some of us created.

Home Learning Adventures Week of Sept 8th, 2015
Welcome! As Ms L meets with each family on their own this week everyone will be at home learning. Until we get to know one another we will focus on more general home learning activities. Throughout the year, Ms. L will continue to post general home learning activities for those of you that are away from our building more than others.
- Create a "wanted" poster which includes an image of you and some interesting facts. If writing is a challenge for you dictate your story and have a grown up help you out. Ms. L has a template that you can use. She will give it to you when we meet for the hour on Tuesday.
- Create a collage with drawings, cut out images, or digital artifacts of all the things that make your heart happy. If you have another creative way to do this please feel free to do that instead. The goal of this activity is to create an artifact that you can share with your classmates that lets us see what makes your heart happy.
- Visit the public library to pick up a collection of books. Read or have them read to you. In pictures and/or writing write a book review explaining what you liked or didn't like about the book(s). We will be talking about our "Need a good book to read" padlet (see tab at the top of this website) and if you're able it would be great if you could add to it.
- Pick one thing that you know a lot about and prepare to share that idea with the rest of your classmates. You may want to create a poster, make a movie, build it in lego or.... It's up to you. We are just curious to learn more about you.
- Each day write number sentences for the date. Depending on your mathematical knowledge this could be as simple as drawing nine object to represent the number 9, writing < or > number sentences, creating an array for the number 9, or writing 9 in exponential form. Feel free to explore big numbers as long as your number sentence ends with = 9. I'm curious to see what you know about numbers and this can be a perfect way to show me.
- With your family explore your community by foot, bus or car. Take note of the different types of businesses and buildings you have in your community.
Remember boys and girls you have arrived exactly how you are supposed to and we are all working at different levels. Your goal is to do work that you are proud of.
Welcome!!
Ms. L is about to embark on a brand new journey with some wonderful kindergarten to grade three students and she can't wait to meet all of you. Please check back often as this will be the space where a lot of our in class learning will be shared. It will also be a place where some of the home learning assignments will be shared too.
If you're in Ms. L's class this year, please snoop around a bit. There are many resources on this blog and many more will be added throughout the year.
Happy 2015-16 school year everyone!

Changes are Coming...
Ms. Lirenman is moving from a single or two grade combined class to a K-3 home/school blended STEAM/INQUIRY/MAKER classroom. For this reason, this blog may look a little different going forward. Not only will it share the excitements of what is happening within the classroom, but it will also be a hub for many of the general home learning ideas we will be exploring too. Don't worry, as we are able we will share our learning with you. We hope you'll follow along on our journey. Stay tuned as the school year is about to begin....
