Using Twitter to Practice Math Number Stories

Right now we are working on writing and answering number stories in math. We have been doing this in many different ways but one way has been through the use of twitter.  We have been tweeting math number stories to the twitter hashtag #mathstory and other classes have been reading and answering our stories.  It's our job to let them know if the have answered our stories properly or not.  Here's what this looks like.  While we have responded to many of the tweets Ms. L couldn't seem to find them.  We have also been responding to number stories that other classes have been adding to the hashtag but for some reason Ms. L. couldn't find those either.  In any case we are having  a lot of fun using twitter and the hashtag #mathstory to learn with others.

Animal Research Books

Sometimes when you look at our individual blogs it looks like all we are sharing with the world is our math but we do a lot more work than just math.  For the past few weeks we have been working super hard on our very first ever INDEPENDENT animal research projects.  We used Discovery Education to find and watch videos about the animals we wanted to research, we read books, and we used a cool iPad app called Pocket Zoo.  We used the can, have, are graphic organizer Ms. Lirenman modified from Mrs. Wideen to organize our information.  We used the iPad app popplet to create a web, and the iPad app Skitch to label an illustration.  We used Draw and Tell to create images for our books too.  We also used Discovery Ed to find images for our stories.  We had the choice to work on our own, or with a friend and many of us chose to work with a friend.  That meant that we had to work together.  We are lucky to have our own iPads though so we could start our books in Book Creator before Ms. Lirenman helped us combined the books onto one iPad to finish it up.  We read our work and made corrections. Then we sent our books to iBooks and took screen shots.  Some of us added voice and created movies in Explain Everything, while others of us added our voices in Draw and Tell and created our final books in iMovie. The cool thing is we did almost all of this all by our selves.  Yes, some of us needed a bit of help here and there from Ms. Lirenman, but for the most part we did this independently.  Anyhow while we are not all finished here are a few books that are finished.  We are VERY proud of what we have created and so is Ms. Lirenman.  In fact Ms. Lirenman is completely and totally impressed with what we have created on our own.  We hope you enjoy reading them too.

Dolphins by Elma and Zahra

Tigers by Jeevan and Kaleb

Tasmanian Devils by Eldon and Roc

Stay tuned!  There are still books about Zebras, Monarch Butterflies, Penguins, Beavers, Killer Whales, and Pigs to come.

We Were On TV!

A few weeks back we were part of a CTV interview that was taking place in Ontario. How were we part of this interview when we live several provinces west? Simple, the interview was about using Skype in the classroom and Mrs. Harrison's kindergarten class was skyping US!  We've been eagerly waiting for it to appear on TV and this evening, in the Toronto area it did!  But since we don't live in the Toronto area we couldn't watch it on TV.  But CTV is awesome because they have put the clip on-line so we can ALL see it now.  If you're curious to see this interview please check out the link below.

It is so much fun learning with others, even if we need a computer to learn with them.

Animal Research - A Sneak Peek

Many of us are so close to finishing our animal research projects and are so excited to share them with the world. We are very proud of what we have created independently. This is the first time we've ever done our very own research. Here are a couple of sneak peek photos from a couple of the books we are creating. Be patient though because soon you will see all of our books.

This is a sneak peek of Ayyappan's book on Penguins.

This is a sneak peek of Roc and Eldon's book on Tasmanian Devils.

Exploring Basic Gymnastics

For the past few weeks we've been exploring basic gymnastics during our PE time. We have explored pencil and log rolls, balance beam, and the spring board and crash might. We also worked on our skipping, and our balance. We used the tunnel too. Here are a few photos.
