The Salmon Eggs have Changed to Alevin!

On Thursday we went back into Mme Kell's classroom to learn some more about the salmon eggs she received back in December.  We learned a bit more about their life cycle and the special equipment to keep them safe in the classroom.

The cool part adds heat when needed, the blue thing is the thermometer .

This big box beside tracks the temperature and makes the water warmer or colder as needed.

When it was time, we looked very closely into the tank to see if the eggs and changed much since they first arrived.  Wow! We were excited to see that they did change over the school holidays.  We could see tiny black bits instead of the eggs but nothing had hatched yet.  Yet is a very important word.

Well you'll never believe what happened the VERY NEXT DAY!  Alevin came out of their egg.  Since they don't swim yet we were able to see them wiggling around in the water.  Their eggs actually stay attached to them as they grow because it's their food supply.  Can you see them in the pictures below? One picture is labeled to help you, one isn't.

It's pretty exciting to know that this is happen right next door in Mme Kell's class.  We learn with a lot of kids around the world but it's great to learn with the kids right next door too.

We are excited to see what happens next with these Alevin.

Learning About Cedar

This morning Ms. V came to our classroom to teach us about cedar, and more specifically how the aboriginal people used cedar before other tools were invented.  It was fascinating to listen to her share. We had so many questions for her.

We couldn't believe all these items were made from Cedar.

Some one asked Ms. V to unroll her cedar.  She told us she couldn't because when it's hard it just cracks and breaks. We learned that it's quite wet/soft when it comes off the tree.

Ms. V also showed us many pictures of other things cedar is used for.  Did you know before diapers were invented cedar was used to help keep cloth diapers from leaking every where.  Cedar absorb the liquid.  Eeew!

Ms. V. also told us a story about a man who helped everyone. When he died a cedar tree grew on top of his grave so he was able to help people for a very, very long time.

At the end of her presentation, and when all of our questions were answered she gave us a really cool word search.  For many of us it was our very first word search.

An ATV Expert

Today we had another classmate share something they are an expert at.  We learned all about ATVing. Did you know that you can ride one in the water?  Did you know that you can't drive backwards on one? We saw many photos and special equipment too.  Here are some photos.

Learning About Measurement

Today we talked about measurement and some of the words we use when we talk about measuring.  As a class we came up with all of these words.

Then we played a little game of figuring out who was tall, taller, and the tallest.  Here are some of the things we discovered.

We had a real hard time deciding on two of these children so we added a third and made two a tie.

After we worked in groups of three or four to figure out our hands and shoes in terms of big, bigger, and biggest.

Zumba

This week we have Zumba classes in the gym.  Today was our first lesson.  It was so much fun.
